Nothing beats a FREE day out & there are plenty of visitor attractions up & down the country that offer free entry! Some of our favourites include;

i. National Coal Mining Museum, (Yorkshire); travel 140 meters underground in the company of an ex-miner to explore the life of a miner.

ii. Tate Liverpool; within you’ll find modern art that will challenge & inspire young & old minds alike. Great free taster tours too!

iii. Scottish Parliament; you can arrange free tours around this prestigious building that gives you a great insight into democracy at work.

iv. Horniman Museum in London; from an over stuffed walrus to a sound garden & music gallery, this museum has a range of old & new exhibits, (small charge for the aquarium).

v. Ulster Museum; come face to face with dinosaurs, meet an Egyptian Mummy or enjoy child-centred interactive discovery areas.

2. ‘Pay What You Like’ Basis

A firm favourite with me must be the ‘pay-what-you-like-basis’ that can be particularly beneficial for those with larger families.

Keep the kids busy during the holidays by helping them to apply for a Blue Peter Badge. Not only will they receive the iconic Blue Peter Badge, (haven’t we all coveted one of those in our time), but badge holders can also gain free entry to over 200 UK visitor attractions too!

4. In My Backyard

Sometimes we can all forget what we have around us & just a little re-packaging can make an old haunt new & exciting for the kids.

Skate Parks; they’ve been sprouting up everywhere over the past few years & kids love to watch even if they don’t feel up to taking part.

Fly a Kite; the old ideas can be the best & a great way to spend quality time with the kids.

It was supposed to open at the beginning of the Alton Towers season back in March,  but The Smiler has yet to smile as the official launch date, (23 May 2013) has once again been delayed.

Due to ‘unforeseen teething problems’ we understand that The Smiler will not open as planned on 23 May & won’t be running on the 24 May either.  No further date for opening has yet to be given.

Following the embarrassing press launch last week that left 16 journalists stranded on The Smiler & eventually led off the ride by construction workers, the situation doesn’t seem to have improved for Alton Towers this week.

What To Do If You Planned The Visit Alton Towers For The Launch Of The Smiler?

Alton Towers have stated that;

‘Guests who have booked tickets for 23^rd or 24th May to specifically ride The Smiler can have them revalidated for another visit during the season. There is no need to contact us, simply turn up and your ticket will be accepted at the gate.’

Of course you can still go to Alton Towers …but no Smiler.

What To Do If You Planned To Stay At The Alton Towers Hotel For The Launch Of The Smiler?

Alton Towers will change the date of your stay, free of charge, should you wish to arrange another date.  Simply call Alton Towers on 0871 2221100.

Again, you can keep to your original reservation should you prefer.

When Is The Smiler Likely To Open?

No further information on this as yet, but keep checking back for further details.

The new Alton Towers thrill coaster ride, The Smiler, is set to open on 23 May 2013!

The long-awaited coaster will have a staggering 14 inversions, (a world’s first!) and is set to thrill this theme park season.

Located within X Sector, close to Oblivion, The Smiler, will reach a top speed of 85km an hour with the highest drop of 30m!

Drayton Manor are running a discounted comeback deal for a second day at this popular Theme Park.  This ‘Drayton Day 2 Ticket’ offers next day entry for just £11 per person when you purchase tickets before you leave the park.

Drayton Manor  are running a great off peak Toddler Ticket for £20 for a combined reduced priced ticket.   This toddler ticket is for children under the age of 4 & remember children under 2 go free anyway!

This toddler ticket is available Monday – Friday term time, (excluding Bank Holidays) & is available between 30 April – 24 May, 3-28 June, 2 Sept – 25 October 2013.

Stop press….The Smiler Opening Date Delayed!

The Smiler at Alton Towers is to open on Thursday 23 May 2013. The latest coaster for Alton Towers, formerly know as SW7, will contain a staggering 14 inversions; a world’s first!

Located in X Sector on the site of the Black Hole, The Smiler will not replacing any current rides located within X Sector, (Oblivion, Submission, Enterprise), & is bound to be a hit for 2013.

Details to emerge about this latest Alton Towers coaster  include;

• A top speed of 85 kilometres-per-hour – 10kph faster than Air;
• Heightest drop of 30 metres;
• A track length of 1,170 metres –three times the length of Oblivion;
• A ride time of 165 seconds – three times longer than Rita;
• A capacity of 16 (4x rows of 4) passengers per ride train
• Minimum rider height 1.4m
• Location; X Sector.
• 14 inversions….a world’s first.

Thrill seekers will need to be over 1.4metres in height to ride The Smiler.

The Smiler is clearly going to be a busy ride for 2013 but it’s good to see that there will be a Single Rider Queue for those that don’t mind riding alone….a FREE way to reduce your queue times.

Fastrack tickets for The Smiler have yet to be announced but we’ll update you as details emerge.

Created by the thrill seeker’s favourite John Wardley, The Smiler will be John’s last coaster following the announcement of his retirement later this year.

Costing a grand total of £18m to design & build, The Smiler will come in on par with Merlin’s last coaster; The Swarm at Thorpe Park.

The Smiler has been manufactured by Gerstlauer, a specialist German Coaster Company, with a design that has a strong resemblance to existing Euro-Fighter coasters.

Gerstlauer also constructed Saw at Thorpe Park which remains one of the most popular coasters at the theme park based in Surrey.
